Rachel Meyers

Tasmanian musician, composer and musicologist Rachel Meyers’ career spans world, folk, and contemporary art music genres. As a multi-instrumentalist, Rachel has recorded several albums and toured nationally, performing at festivals around the country including A Festival Called Panama, Dark MOFO, MONA FOMA, National Folk Festival, Cygnet Folk Festival, Maldon Folk Festival, and more. She has composed, arranged, and collaborated on original music for her various ensembles for over 10 years, most notably for Meyers & McNamara, an experimental chamber-folk duo.

Rachel has worked on several competitively-funded projects, including the Australian Research Council and Arts Tasmania. She has worked in schools as a Teaching Artist with The Songroom, and taught instrumental music for over fifteen years.

Recently, Rachel has been supported with grants and residencies from Arts Tasmania, Folk Federation of Tasmania, and Tasmania Performs. In 2018, she was awarded a fully funded scholarship to a 12-day Creative Music Intensive with the Australian Art Orchestra. She is currently studying for a PhD in environmental sound art and musicology, and in receipt of a prestigious Research Training Program Scholarship.

She is deeply passionate about working with ecological and musicological stories of place and identity, and using art as a tool for real, tangible community change. Her most recent major performance project culminated in a sold out event at the Hobart Jewish Synagogue and explored her identity as a secular Jewish woman and musician with original arrangements and compositions. She is currently moving her creative practice towards environmental sound art and history, and developing a work co-commissioned by Next Wave Festival and Liquid Architecture.
