Composite is an artist-led platform for contemporary moving-image practice, located within the Brunswick Mechanics Institute in partnership with Next Wave.
Their 2026 program brings together a year-long sequence of screenings, commissions, sound works, and broadcast experiments that invite new encounters between artists, audiences, and the evolving languages of film, video, and audio-visual art.
Moving-image practice today is shaped by rapid technological, cultural, and economic shifts that continue to blur distinctions between cinema, contemporary art, performance, and sound.
Composite’s program is dedicated to this expanded field.
Throughout 2026, Composite will commission new moving-image and audio works, present an international guest-curated screening series pairing artists and writers, and continue the development of Radio Composite, our live broadcasting platform for experimental sound, conversation, and performance. Together these initiatives create space for emergent approaches to producing, exhibiting, and disseminating moving-image work that often sit outside market-driven festival circuits.
Composite also serves as a context for learning and exchange. Our screenings, talks, and broadcasts position contemporary works alongside broader histories of experimental film, video art, and artist-led media practices, while foregrounding the diversity of Australian and international voices reshaping the field. In doing so, Composite aims to cultivate a responsive, artist-centred environment where new ideas can take form and where audiences can encounter the depth and vitality of moving-image culture today.
