This International Women’s Day, Next Wave’s Young Artistic Directorate has partnered with Brunswick Music Festival, PHOTO 2024, BlakDot Gallery and Arts Merri-bek to present a special performance inspired by the exhibition, Future Rivers: When the Past Flows.

The Young Artistic Directorate (Y-AD) are part of an inaugural Next Wave program called A Rising Tide. A Rising Tide is a leadership and curatorial program that provides a container for community organizers to take risks in curating, community building and culture building.

The International Women’s Day Performance will be the Y-AD’s first curatorial project – inviting them to experiment with their collaborative/curatorial framework. This process includes asking the question, ‘Who gets to decide and why?’

In the planning process, the Y-AD decided that this should be a femme-curated event, with Banda playing a supporting role so that our female and gender-diverse Y-AD could step up.

Led by MaggZ and Matisse, Next Wave’s International Women’s Day Performance platforms Femme and First Nations peoples.

Grounding the event is SOVBLKPSSY – a Ngarrindjeri and Ramindjeri multi-instrumentalist, producer, and DJ, blending global club music with her own unique style.

The event flows into a movement performance by MaggZ, creatively responding to the ‘Future Rivers’ Exhibition at Counihan Gallery, featuring works by Julie Gough, Maree Clarke, Peta Clancy and Jody Haines exploring the idea that monuments conceal the past and that underneath each building or stretch of asphalt there are deep layers of meaning and history.

The event later transitions to the Brunswick Mechanics courtyard, where works from Jody Haine’s Flowing with the future (surviving Batman) are currently on display. The performance will continue with artist, activist and musician Aseel Tayah, honouring the resilience, strength and empowerment of women of Palestine.
