Hello!

thursday 24 may 2012

Get your kicks on Day 6. From iPhone illuminated circus to taste testing with the Shaman, NWF2012 has a greater variety of kicks than a stony-faced Steven Seagal on a US Navy battleship. And more shows are fresh outta the kitchen, including The Exchange Program 2 and BINGO Unit's back-lot tour featuring John Wood from Blue Heelers. Kapow!

Last night we partied at Wake Up with Minogue in a Savage Garden of Oz Culture, thanks to Hossein Ghaemi and Claire Finneran's Way Out program of themed DJ sets. They're back again tonight with a night of Death/Rebirth after a day of weird and wonderful stuff from Applespiel, Tape Projects, LuckyPDF, and Charles Dennington & Tully Arnot. Go on a space walk, go back to a better school, go into the mind of Carol Brown or go into your own think tank - just go to Wake Up!

For now, read on for picks from a couple of our Day Pass Ringleaders and Text Campers, and the skinny on free events around town.

ringleader PICK: shelters

Ringleader Beau McCafferty says...

"By any reasonable measure Docklands is currently a failed community, residential and commercial space with its most recent rushed incarnation invoking Canberra and drabness. Joseph L Griffith's Shelters contrast against the uniformity and prefabrication of the area, summoning times past and providing refuge from the surrounding artificial dwellings. Beautiful and organic, they offer a glimpse of what was and what may come to pass."

Shelters now showing until 27 May

ringleader PICK: the greater asia co-prosperity sphere

Ringleader Bree Edger says...

"The highlights of our day on Day Pass 3 began with the GACPS embassy. The NGV Studio was so lavish and I really appreciated the large tribute painting of Keanu Reeves that greets you at the door. Also, the clip of Yul Brynner from the King and I on repeat was pretty great. We were treated to a display of Wushu martial arts from the Melbourne Uni club and then spent the rest of the morning playing table tennis, Wii sports and Chinese checkers with the ambassadors of this empire."

text camper PICK: supertone

Text Camper Anabelle Lacroix says...

"Inspired by the Wizard of Oz and recent music videos, SUPERTONE - for me - opened up the relationship between contemporary dance and cinema in a way I haven't thought of before. I loved the changing Technicolor environment and the reference to the film clap. It is a minimal piece that is intelligent, innovative, and very rich when working on your imagination!"

text camper PICK: the stream / the boat / the shore / the bridge

Text Camper Jane Howard says...

"From a little booth on the Southbank Wharf usually home to river cruises, I took a different kind of tour of the Yarra. For four people at a time, those who explore The Stream/The Boat/The Shore/The Bridge have journeys that are similar and connected, but separate and personal. To talk about it too much is to give away its secrets and surprises, but you might learn some more about the river, how to leave troubles behind, how a city is made, and how to take an unexpected chance on yourself and on others. I left feeling joyed, hopeful, centred and connected."
