Next Wave wins VicHealth award for access and inclusivity

We are very proud and and excited to have WON the 2016 VicHealth award in the ‘Building health through arts’ category for Next Wave Festival 2016’s access and inclusivity!

We extended our deepest thanks to all artists, audience, partners and collaborators who contributed to this achievement, particularly Arts Access Victoria for their invaluable support and advice.

In May 2016, we delivered the most inclusive and accessible Festival in our 32-year history, and in doing so became an industry leader in best practice artist and audience accessibility. Through a consultative, learning-driven process centred on our values of ‘listening hard’ and ‘taking responsibility’, we made a whole-of-organisation commitment to inclusivity: from programming and artist education through to marketing and professional development.

We welcomed an increase in accessibility for artists and audiences with disability, including capacity crowds and critical acclaim for The Delta Project’s Under My Skin, by deaf and hearing dancers; a new collaboration with Arts Project Australia through the Emerging Curators Program; a comprehensive suite of accessible marketing materials; and a record number of Auslan interpreted, audio described and captioned artworks and events.
