New Grand Narrative Profile: Phuong Ngo

Next up in our New Grand Narrative Profile Series, is visual artist Phuong Ngo, whose 2014 Next Wave Festival project, Article 14.1,  sees him living off the limited rations his parents had as boat people as part of a 10-day exhibition. Somewhat ironically recorded at a Vietnamese restaurant in Richmond, Phuong speaks of his father’s experience as a people smuggler in the 1980s.

Exploring the Vietnamese refugee narrative through video, photography, installation and performance, Phuong seeks to understand the lived experience of his ancestors, and the broader struggle of asylum seekers. Phuong is currently on a research trip through refugee camps across Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam and Malaysia, you can follow his experiences and watch his practice grow on his project blog here.
