Liesel Zink at Dancehouse

2012 alumna Liesel Zink is one of three choreographers who’ve created new dance works for SURGE, a Dancehouse triple bill, performed by the LINK Dance Company.

LINK is the West Australian Academy of Perorming Arts’s (WAAPA) pre-professional dance company, created to help dancers make a smooth transition from student to professional life. Structured like a professional company, LINK presents two seasons annually as well as an Australian and European tour, from which they have just returned.

Liesel’s piece, The Miranda Warning, is informed by the limitations of protest as a form activism in Australia’s contemporary society and asks how arts practice can be used to find new forms of social and political activism.

On working with LINK, Liesel says, “It has been fascinating to bring these questions to the LINK rehearsal room and work with these eight intelligent young women who are not only trying to find their individual political voice, but also [learning] how they can use creativity to impact the world they live in. We have been exploring the challenges associated with this; concepts of freedom of speech, collective action, mass vulnerability and above all the importance of human connection.”

The Miranda Warning will be present alongside works from choreographer Matt Cornell and LINK Artistic Director, Michael Whaites.
