Sarah Aiken is a Melbourne based dancer, choreographer and teacher. Since graduating from VCA (Bachelor of Dance) 2009, Sarah has pursued a wide range of experiences to develop her practice, drawing inspiration from choreographic and somatic practices, travel, conceptual and visual arts. Sarah pursues an ongoing interest in how and what we value, utilizing dichotomies and clashes, aiming to create poignancy through absurdity.
Sarah is a recipient of Australia Council for the Arts, ArtStart, and Ian Potter Cultural Trust Fund, spending time developing her practice and creating work in France and Germany. Performance credits include: Natalie Abbott’s PHYSICAL FRACTALS (Dance Massive 2013) and Jo Lloyd’s 24hr NOISE (2013) and work by Shian Law, Carlee Mellow, James Welsby, Brooke Stamp and Aphids, Deanne Butterworth/Linda Tegg, Gabbie Barton and the Dirty Three, Zoey Dawson and Lara Thoms, Supple Fox, Ben Speth, and Eliza Dyball.
Sarah was a finalist for the inaugural Keir Choreographic Award, presenting a new work Three Short Dances (Dancehouse & Carriageworks). Choreographic work includes Set (Lucy Guerin Inc. Pieces for Small Spaces, 2013, EDC Solo Festival of Dance 2014) Now Something Really Final (K77, Berlin 2012), Jurassic Arc (Dancehouse, Melbourne Fringe 2012) as well as a range of collaborative and interdisciplinary projects across music, live art, film, photography and visual arts.
Together with Rebecca Jensen, Sarah created and performed OVERWORLD (premiering at Next Wave Festival 2014) and founded Deep Soulful Sweats; a participatory, yogic, disco (Next Wave Festival 2014, Dark Mono Foma, Faux Mo 2014, Chunky Move).
